Bay of Plenty has lots of island adventures just waiting for you, and all are within easy reach by boat from the Tauranga Harbour, or by gyroplane, helicopter or fixed wing aircraft from Tauranga. The Tuhua (Mayor Island) marine reserve (pictured above) is a dormant, collapsed volcano that sits on the edge of the continental shelf. The surrounding clear blue water, mixture of shallow reefs and deep water drop offs provide the perfect environment for a wide variety of marine life, including diverse subtropical fish species, seals, dolphins, sharks and rays, as well as impressive geological features and other natural above and underwater must see places of interest. All this makes Mayor Island one of the best (if not the very best) snorkeling and diving locations in Bay of Plenty. Mayor Island is also synonymous with fishing, and in particular big game sports fishing. The excellent water quality, sudden changes in water depth, nutrient rich currents and abundant supply of food sources, make this an ideal hunting ground for larger game fish species such as marlin, tuna and kingfish. Mayor Island makes for a wonderful day trip experience or pre-arranged overnight stay with so many other activities available including: tramping/walks, boating, ocean kayaking, stand up paddle boarding and swimming. This is just one of Bay of Plenty's islands that is well worth visiting. Go here for more island destinations, including tour and charter operators servicing the picturesque Moutohora/Whale Island and fascinating, world renowned active volcanic marine reserve, Whakaari/White Island.
