Tauranga City Airport . . .
. The Tauranga City Airport is located adjacent to the Tauranga Harbour in Mount Maunganui, and within 5 minutes' drive from the Tauranga Waterfront, CBD and downtown shopping district. The airport's convenient location is also just a few minutes' drive from the Port of Tauranga cruise ship passenger terminal, local tourist attractions and Bay of Plenty beaches.
Originally opened in 1939 - only to almost immediately be taken over by the Royal New Zealand Air Force due to the onset of WWII - the airport was used as a much needed training station for pilots. In 1945, passenger flights to Tauranga's neighbouring Motiti and Matakana Islands were introduced, and in 1947 the New Zealand National Airways Corporation (NAC) began larger and more frequent passenger flights to the airport.
In 1978, Air New Zealand merged with the NAC and took over the majority of the airport's existing passenger traffic. Over the following years, several infrastructure upgrades, including runway extensions and other airfield improvements, continued to take place. Nowadays, the Tauranga City Airport continues its steady growth with ever increasing commercial passenger numbers, and as a popular recreational facility providing spectacular airshow events and a host of aviation, travel and tourism related services.
